Living in Surprise

Surprise sits in the northwest part of Greater Phoenix, in the West Valley along the Grand Avenue (US 60) corridor. The city is best known as a spring training destination, with the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals sharing Surprise Stadium each spring, and its streets look west toward the White Tank Mountains. Surprise combines a city recreation hub, desert open space and a wide range of neighborhoods, with the Peoria office of CENTURY 21 Arizona Foothills serving the area.

What Is There to Do in Surprise?

Surprise Stadium and the Recreation Campus

Surprise Stadium, at 15850 N. Bullard Avenue, seats 10,500 and anchors the Surprise Recreation Campus, a 124-acre site with six full practice fields alongside the ballpark. The Royals practice complex sits on the northwest end and the Rangers complex on the east side, and the practice fields are open to the public with free parking during spring training. The Surprise Aquatic Center sits next to the complex, so the campus stays in use well beyond baseball season.

White Tank Mountain Regional Park

To the southwest, White Tank Mountain Regional Park, part of the Maricopa County park system, covers the eastern slopes of the White Tank Mountains. Its Waterfall Trail leads about 0.9 miles into a narrow rock canyon, passing Petroglyph Plaza, a dense collection of ancient rock carvings, and the first half mile is barrier-free. The waterfall itself runs after heavy rain, while a pool at its base holds water most of the year. Longer trails across the range serve hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders.

What Is It Like to Live in Surprise?

Surprise is laid out on a broad desert grid, with neighborhoods spread across the city and shopping centers along the main arterials. The Recreation Campus gives the city a central gathering place for sports, swimming and community events, and the White Tank Mountains provide a constant western backdrop. Many neighborhoods are organized as master-planned communities with their own parks, paths and amenity centers, which shapes much of day-to-day life close to home.
